We are lucky enough to have Joel Brown from addicted2success joining us to talk about HOW the mind is medicine and how he’s been able to like cast this 10 year vision and consciously engineer into his own reality.
Let’s get into his story. We were both from a small town in Perth, Western Australia, Fremantle and the surrounding area. I asked him where did his story begin and he shared 13 amazing ways that our mind is medicine.
1. CAST A VISION – 12 MONTHS & EVEN 10 YEARS
He shares that “10 and a half years ago, I cast a vision, for success, to bring together a community of aspiring like minded people that desire to live more so into their ultimate human potential. I didn’t realise it at the time, but it became addicted2success.com and now it’s the number one self development motivation website. We have a successful podcast with over 3 million views/downloads and we’ve got a lot of reach at the moment. The biggest bonus is that we’ve got an amazing community, but I think it’s really a Testament to the fact that people want hope. People want to have something to believe in. They desire to find their North star, their desire to create something of meaningful in their lives so that they can feel like they’re part of the bigger picture and the bigger goings on in life. it’s been an awesome journey so far.
2. BE A STUDENT OF LIFE
I think that your business can only grow to the extent that you do. So in that process, I’ve just been a student and just an open book. And it’s really cool to see what’s happened over the last 10 and a half years that I’ve been in the online game in the space.
I think a lot of people now are starting to click on onto it and realizing like, wow, I actually do get to improve myself. That society’s way of living. Isn’t just the limit. There’s so much more to this. I want to share ith people, don’t wait for governments and society and institutions to tell you what to do, go out there and be a trailblazer, carve a new path. And I think if we can just get out of our own way and get into our potential and know that, whatever you’re dreaming right now, whatever you’re envisioning for the future, that it is possible.
3. EMBRACE THE UPS AND DOWNS AS LEARNINGS
I believe that there’s so much within us that we get to work through and there’s so much in us that we haven’t even tapped into yet. I love that idea. I love that we’re never fully there that there’s just so much more that we get to expand with. I don’t think it’s selfish going inwards first. Its self expansion from within, not self development. I like the term “self expansion”, because that means that as we grow our impact and abundance, we get to give more and create a positive ripple effect throughout the world. So we share some similar passion.
He’s simply one person, “one dude”, just like you.
4. FIND YOUR IKIGAI “REASON FOR BEING” AND GIVE IT TO THE WORLD
He shares that he found a sense of purpose, his ikigai if you will; what the world needs, what hes good at, what he loves doing and what the world is willing to exchange value for. From here he simply cast a vision for 12 months then for 10 years. Learning how to match his daily rituals, so that he could start living that dream, in this reality.
5. YOU DON’T NEED A UNIVERSITY DEGREE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE
Joel shares that “I Dropped out of high schooL, I got severely bullied throughout high school. To be honest, I questioned every day why I was there, I didn’t connect with it. I didn’t resonate with the content that I was taught. And I think within myself, I always, I always challenged this norm. I was like, this doesn’t make sense. So, I dropped out of high school and I actually got into the music industry. Within the music industry I started doing really well. I realized that learning how to be resourceful was the way to achieve more. I learned how to network. I learned how to negotiate. I learn how to read contracts. I learned how to travel by myself and build my independence. And most of all I got to express my creativity and be a part of some pretty awesome projects with some major label artists. That was a cool experience.
6. ALIGNMENT IS THE ANTI-HUSTLE
In his success in the music industry he then shared that “ultimately what I realized, Is that I was really pushing for this overcompensation, every success, just push, push, push, push, push, it gets exhausting. It’s lower frequency living. It was all coming from fear and ego. It was coming from pride. Ultimate lower frequencies in our map of consciousness.
I kind of fooled myself into the false belief that success needs to be hard. Success needs to be this like hustle, hustle, hustle until your face and your feet fall off. That old school kind of Gary Vaynerchuk mentality of success. He was someone that I looked up to at the time. I was like, wow, he’s really cracked the code. And you know, even Gary, as you seem today, he’s paying more attention to his health. He’s about happiness. It’s about fulfilment. He’s not pushing to get the gray hairs anymore. So I think there’s a difference between being smart and working hard. However, you can do both and still be in alignment. And if we can pair the two together and direct that energy, that’s in alignment is way more powerful than just pushing a Boulder up a Hill.
7. YOU CAN ALWAYS PIVOT AND ALIGN TO A NEW PATH
So I ended up leaving the music industry because I realized I was doing so much of it for the approval of others. I would say yes to things I really wanted to say no to. I made it all about the money rather than about my passion.
I think we were kind of folded into this idea that you only get one passion. It’s not true. We have multiple passions in our lives and sometimes one passion leads you to an even bigger, greater passion for more impact and more fulfilment. And that’s my story. I’ve been able to leap into different spaces,
but along the way, I learned how to trust myself. And in that learning of trusting myself, I was able to build things that were substantial in a way where I’m now able to support more people on a bigger scale.
8. GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO THINK BIGGER
After I left the music industry, I came back to Perth, Western Australia. I took on a job in corporate telecommunications sales and lived the high life in the city on the 26th floor in my ivory tower with my fancy watch and my shiny shoes and suit. I was on, you know, my fifth cup of coffee with my manager standing next to me sharing that we’re going to get you up the ranks brother. And that you’re going to be working here right at the top for the next 10, 20 years. That vision, didnt align with my true north. So I started seeking new truths.
I had the opportunity to actually meet Jordan Belfort, the Wolf of wall street. He challenged me for the first time in my life to think bigger than just goals.
Goals are good for short term success. But a vision, a 10 year vision for your success is great for evergreen long term fulfilment and impact.
9. ASK YOURSELF POWERFUL QUESTIONS
So I got really fixated on my 10 year vision. I started dreaming and scripting again. I need it, becauseI had found myself in the rat race again hopping and skipping around and trying to work path out.
I started asking good questions.
What do I focus on?
What clarity do I need?
Who’s going to hold me accountable.
I started immersing myself and reading a lot of self development books at a time listening to a lot of audios. I was in this like hungry mode and I was challenged with these questions of;
What are you good at?
What do you love?
What solution will you bring to the world?
And how are you going to monetize this, to build this thing out.
I sat down and wrote it all out. The answers got really clear. I knew and reminded myself of what I valued most. I valued business, self development, contribution, traveling, teaching. I was like, wow, well, if I can build a business or a brand around that, that’d be pretty cool. Cause then that means that I’m living in the five most important things to me, that would light me up.
As I got clearer my energy started to rise from within. I got clear on the beliefs that I would need to believe about myself in order to be able to fulfill that vision. This started filling my cup each day. I found positive, new reference points of creation and opportunity and possibility. And then, I did some work around past trauma, learning to heal and move through those wounds and identifying the BS stories that were holding me back. Learning to accept them and let them go.Forgiving myself and others in the process.
10. HABITS AND DAILY RITUALS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAT JUST KNOWING
From vision, thoughts and beliefs, I then moved into habits. I realized the habits I needed to implement each day that were energy bolts of action. The actions and doing that would take me each and every day closer to my version of success.
I started to implement those habits, found my key cornerstone habits, my skills. I developed new skill sets. I either hired or acquired skill sets and I slowly but surely saw that 10 year vision start to come together. As I started to direct my energy, my focus started to build clarity. And every time I stepped in, I started trusting myself more and more. Because I trusted myself more and more. I increased my certainty. Because I increased my certainty. I then was able to have more influence. Because I had more influence. I then was able to enrol people in the vision to come together, to support me in having a bigger impact together.
11. CERTAINTY INFLUENCES IMPACT
So it’s certainty that attracts influence, which permits impact. That’s the sequence that it works in for me. I think a lot of people haven’t even built an ounce of certainty yet. They say they want to save the world. But, they’re trying to jump the gun and are kind of tricking themselves into thinking that they are doing something positive. Yet, most people can’t even save themselves or positively influence their proximity and the people they care about most. I feel we ll need to address our uncertainty before anything else.
I too felt like I had hit an upper limit. But it was “the ego” speaking. It made me self-realise that I had even more inner work to do. Because like I shred at the beginning, my business could only grow to the extent that I was growing myself. I had only just started to figure out myself and was not yet having a big impact, like I am today.
It led me to tantra and Kundalini and all those different spiritual modalities. again, I was committed to being a student of life.
12. COLLABORATE & CO-CREATE. LEVERAGE OTHERS
What have been the best interviews or connections that, you know, the most memorable ones to you?
I would say Tony Robbins definitely hands down. He’s everything. And more, you know, when you meet him in person to what you see on camera, he’s a powerhouse. We were in a movie together called “rise up “with Richard Branson, Dalai Lama, Jack Canfield. I was on set with Tony and it was mazing to feel the energy and presence that he has. He’s the real deal and such a huge heart man to give.
Deepak Chopra. He jumped on the addicted to success podcast and shared his wisdom as well.
Dr Joe Dispenza as you can imagine, is a well of wisdom and amazing guy,
Simon Sinek, just incredibly intelligent, like miles ahead, very strategic thinker and very deep and insightful
Gabby Bernstein was amazing too. She’s been around and done some pretty amazing things in the self development space.
Les Brown has been around for the last four decades or five decades now. He had some pretty emotional moments when he shared stories about his mom passing away and, and he just got so vulnerable and real and it brought it back to the soul
Being in this self development space, as you know, I’ve been in it for almost 11 years now and you know, there’s a lot of ego in the space and there’s a lot of pride. As I see new people coming in, I want the best for everyone and hope that we can keep having a bigger positive impact together. That’s what its all about.
13. NEVER SACRIFICE YOUR ALIGNMENT
Never sacrifice your alignment no matter what, when it comes to business, friendships, relationships. If you feel that it’s not right for you or it’s not conducive to your growth and it’s not going towards your vision or a positive impact in other people’s lives, lean away from it. Don’t continue to do it. It sounds so simple and so straightforward. And I can tell you like 50 million wise words, quotables and all that. But honestly this is the part here that if you learn how to master this and you can start with this, everything else starts to fall into place.
As Joel built the skills that he needed and then the habits. His 10 year vision started to slowly manifest and unfold to the point where It has impacted a million people , then 2 million and then 3 million+. But it started with going first, doing the inner work, learning how to influence his front doorstep, and influencing his proximity. That’s where it all began.
Imagine if there were 10 more people like Joel out there looking to impact a million people doing so in a really positive way, in a high vibration, whether it’s from success in abundance or whether it’s from health or whether it’s emotional healing, it doesn’t matter. The time is now to call this collective group of minds together. Let’s see if we can start to create some really cool shifts in the world.
